Emergency Planning

Community Emergency Plan

Saxlingham Nethergate, supported by the Parish Council, has had an active Community Emergency Plan for some years.

In the past the village has had to deal with power-cuts and loss of water supply or telephone lines. At these times the Community Emergency Plan has been used to identify those who may need assistance and to provide help and support.

It is recognised that extreme weather or other unforeseen circumstances can mean that anyone, anywhere could suddenly find themselves without drinking water or electricity or be stuck in, or away from, their home for a considerable period of time. This could coincide with the Emergency Services having to respond to larger issues in the surrounding area.

The best way for any community to survive and recover is good, old-fashioned community spirit: local people helping neighbours and other local people.

Copies of Saxlingham Nethergate’s Community Emergency Plan are held by:

Loss of Electricity Supply

Some years ago we experienced a prolonged power failure (22 hours) within the parish and surrounding area.  During this loss of electricity supply it was virtually impossible to get any information from EDF, the power supplier, as their switchboard was unable to cope with the number of calls generated by people wanting an update on the situation.  In order to prevent this happening in the future, the following arrangement was made with South Norfolk Council Emergency Planning Department:-

In the event of prolonged loss of electricity supply, SNC will contact EDF on their direct line and obtain as much information as possible. This information will then be made available to each Parish Councillor.  Anyone in the parish could then contact a Parish Councillor to receive an update on the situation rather than trying to phone EDF.
(The telephone system is not usually affected by loss of power from the National Grid).
